Sending messages

Send a message dialog

To send a message using SonicHANDY, rather than typing it on a handset, you must have at least one device connected (online) first. Then open the 'Send a message' dialog either by using toolbar, menu command, or by activating item in the Contacts list or messages list, and you are ready to go.

Next, we'll describe the dialog fields. On the picture to the left, you have an example of how the dialog looks like.

"To:" button

Press this button if you wish to select recipients from the device phonebook.

"To:" field

This field displays recipient to which the message will be delivered, or the total number of recipients if sending a bulk message. You can also manually enter recipient's phone number in the field. For international numbers, start with the plus (+) sign to instruct SonicHANDY that the number entered is international (eg. +314159265358).

Message body and character info field

Type the text of your message in the large central field. When composing a message, a number of characters available before adding another SMS to the message will be displayed below the lower-left corner of the field. Total number of SMSes contained in this message is also presented.

If you type in a character that can't be presented by currently selected encoding other than Unicode, program will automatically try to find a replacement for the invalid character. If the replacement exists, it will be used in place of the original character when the message is sent; otherwise a question mark (?) will be used to replace it. For example, if you type a text 'čžš' with the Standard encoding selected, it will be replaced with the text 'czs'. But if you type '÷' (illegal character for Standard encoding) it will be replaced with '?', because there is no acceptable replacement.

If the replacement characters are used, this will be indicated by a "(replacements used)" flag. If the replacement cannot be found for invalid characters, and question marks are used instead, this condition will be indicated by a "??" flag.

For example, if you are writing long message with Standard encoding selected, currently typing a second SMS of this message, the field will display something like: '117 2 messages'. If you now suddenly type in a string '÷Ł', the field will display: '?? 115 2 messages, (replacements used)', because there is no replacement for the first character, but the second one will be replaced with 'L'.


You can insert a predefined smiley symbols (emoticons, eg. ':-D') into the message by choosing from a toolbar that pops up when you click the corresponding button. A text of the emoticon will be inserted into the message body on a current cursor position.

A predefined animated emoticon (EMS animation) can also be inserted by clicking the other button from the two. Note: Animated emoticons are visible only on phones which support Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) format. On other phones, only text of the message will be displayed, with EMS emoticons omitted.


Select a device that shall be used to deliver this message, and select encoding for this message. Note that different encodings have different number of characters available per SMS. Also, different encodings may have different character sets available (that is, different characters will be forbidden).

IMPORTANT! SMS messages written in SonicHANDY encoding can ONLY be read with SonicHANDY. They can not be read by a mobile device. Do not send this type of SMS messages to a person not familiar with SonicHANDY, as they will be unable to read the messages unless they install the program.

SonicHANDY signature

When checked, a short SonicHANDY promo-signature will be appended to your outgoing message. Signature will only be appended if there's some empty space available at the end of the last SMS of your message. To uncheck this box you must own a license for the program.

Request status report

Check this box if you want to receive a status report after successful delivery of your message.

Advanced button

Press this button to open a popup window with options and additional actions for the message. Changes to this options are only temporary; they are reset when you open 'Send a message' dialog again.

Preview button

Press this button to preview your message before sending. Message is presented in two forms; one with included emoticon graphics and animations, and one with pure text without any graphics.


Press the Send button or ALT+S key combination to send this message instantly.

Note: You have a few seconds to cancel message delivery after clicking Send (depends on program setting). When that time is up, message delivered is truly initiated and cannot be canceled.

If, for any reason, you close the dialog while composing a message, your message will be preserved for the next time you open the dialog for this device.
